eFinanceDoctor had a half-built investment platform on an ageing CodeIgniter 3 codebase, with an unoptimised schema, no documentation and partner integrations still pending. We redesigned the data model first, rebuilt the application on CodeIgniter 4, and reworked every investor flow behind encrypted APIs.
The platform worked, in the sense that it ran. But it had been built quickly against a schema that no longer matched what the business did, on a framework version approaching end of life, with no documentation of why anything was the way it was.
Every new feature cost more than the last. And a pending integration with external verification partners carried security requirements the existing architecture could not meet without a rethink.
The schema came first, because nothing built above it could be better than it was. The data model was redesigned around the entities the business actually deals in, rather than the ones the original build had guessed at.
The application was then rebuilt on CodeIgniter 4, a migration rather than a rewrite in spirit, with the flows moved deliberately rather than all at once. Investor journeys were reworked to sit behind encrypted API exchange with the verification partners, and configuration was lifted out of the code into admin settings, so changing a business rule stopped requiring a deployment.
The investor dashboard is now configurable by the people who own the product rather than by whoever is free to deploy. Partner verification runs over an encrypted exchange that satisfies the partners' requirements rather than working around them.
The durable result is documentation and a data model someone else can pick up. The platform stopped being a thing only its original author could safely change.
The stack is a consequence of the decision, not the other way round. On a different set of constraints these would be different names doing the same jobs.
